gaur の語源・成り立ち Etymology
gaur は19世紀にヒンディー語 gaur から英語へ入り、さらにサンスクリット語 gāura にさかのぼります。分解語ではなく、南アジアの大型野牛を現地名のまま借りた語で、土地の呼び名がそのまま英語名になった形です。関連語は gayal、cow。
Gaur entered English in the 19th century from Hindi gaur, and it ultimately goes back to Sanskrit gaura. It is not built from smaller English parts but was borrowed from a South Asian local name for the animal. The meaning stayed almost unchanged as the word moved into English, keeping the original regional name. A related animal name is gayal.
