go は古英語 gan、under は古英語 under に由来する、どちらも古いゲルマン系の語です。直訳は「下へ行く」で、もとは船が沈む像を表し、そこから「事業が水面下に消える」という比喩で go under が「倒産する」を意味するようになりました。関連語は undergo, underlie です。
