Memory Tip
In its mythological sense, Gorgon is normally capitalized. Connect it with Greek gorgos, “terrible” or “fierce,” and picture the classic scene in which looking at the monster leads to petrification. Medusa is one Gorgon, not another name for the entire group, so remember the relationship as member and class. In museum or art-history English, useful combinations include a Gorgon figure, a Gorgon head, and a Gorgon from Greek myth. A gargoyle may look similarly frightening, but it belongs to architecture rather than this Greek legend.

Etymology
Gorgon comes through Latin from Greek Gorgō, a name based on gorgos, meaning “terrible,” “grim,” or “fierce.” In Greek mythology the name was applied to three monstrous sisters, of whom Medusa became the most famous. Their frightening faces were also represented in protective art. English later developed figurative uses for a terrifying person or appearance, although the mythological sense remains the central one here.
