Etymology

Gosh arose as a euphemistic alteration of God, allowing speakers to avoid saying the divine name directly in an exclamation. God itself descends from Old English god and is related to other Germanic forms reconstructed from Proto-Germanic. As the sound was deliberately altered, gosh developed an independent, milder conversational force. It now commonly introduces reactions of surprise, dismay, admiration, or concern rather than functioning as a religious reference.
