解説 Definition

Informal talk or stories about other people's private lives, often involving information that has not been confirmed. It can range from casual conversation among friends to unkind discussion of someone's behavior.

Memory Tip

gossip about A「Aについてうわさする」、office gossip「職場のうわさ」の形が頻出。

Think of office gossip as coworkers sharing stories about other people's private lives. Focus on the content of the conversation: personal details and uncertain stories help distinguish it from general chat.

Etymology

The word comes from Old English godsibb, combining god with sibb, meaning kinship or a family connection. It originally referred to a godparent or close friend, and the meaning later shifted toward the personal talk associated with close companions.
