grebe はフランス語 grèbe から入った鳥名で、英語では意味要素に分けるより、その名を博物学用語として借りた語だ。接辞分解はしにくいが、関連語に great crested grebe と little grebe がある。つまり組み立て語ではなく、特定の潜水鳥の名前そのものだ。
Grebe was borrowed from French grèbe as the name of the bird. It is not easy to divide into smaller meaningful parts in English. The word entered English as a zoological bird name and kept that narrow use. Related forms appear in names such as great crested grebe and little grebe.
