グリニッジ

解説 Definition

Greenwich はロンドン南東部にある地区名で、グリニッジと呼ばれます。グリニッジ天文台や本初子午線との関係で知られる地名です。

A district in southeast London on the River Thames, known especially for the Royal Observatory and the prime meridian used as the reference point for longitude. It is also associated with Greenwich Mean Time.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

Greenwich は green「緑」と、古い地名要素 wīc「港・集落」に由来するロンドン南東部の地名です。綴りをそのまま「グリーン・ウィッチ」と読まず、現地の一般的な発音は「グレニッチ」に近い点に注意します。the Royal Observatory、the prime meridian、the Thames と一緒に、天文台と本初子午線の場所として覚えましょう。

Break the spelling into green and the old place-name element wich, but do not pronounce the London name as “green witch.” In British usage, Greenwich is commonly pronounced roughly “GREN-itch.” Fix it in memory through three strong associations: the Royal Observatory, the prime meridian, and the River Thames. A map showing Greenwich in southeast London makes these links concrete. Capitalize it when referring to the place, and remember that Greenwich Mean Time takes its name from the observatory located there.

greenwich の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 Grēnawīc(緑の港)から。grēne(緑)+ wīc(港・集落)の合成語。wīc はラテン語 vicus(村)に由来し、village や vicinity と同根。テムズ川沿いの緑豊かな港町という地名がそのまま本初子午線の代名詞となった。

Greenwich comes from the Old English place name Grēnewīc or Grēnawīc, traditionally interpreted as “green harbor” or “green settlement.” It combines grēne, the ancestor of modern green, with wīc, a settlement, trading place, or harbor. Wīc was borrowed into Germanic from Latin vicus, “village” or “district.” The place later gave its name to the Greenwich meridian and Greenwich Mean Time.
