ラテン語 halcyon を経て、ギリシャ語 halkyon/alcyon「カワセミ」にさかのぼる語です。ギリシャ神話ではこの鳥が産卵期に海を静めるとされ、その伝承から halcyon days は「穏やかな日々」を意味するようになりました。だから halcyon が「平穏な」を表すのです。関連語は Alcyone, halcyon days です。
