head を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。heading は「文書の頭に置くもの」から「見出し」。headline が新聞記事の大見出しを強く連想させるのに対し、heading は章・節・項目など幅広いタイトルに使えます。section heading, chapter heading の形でよく出るので、本文をざっと読むときにまず heading を追って全体構成をつかむ場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。なお be heading for ... では「〜へ向かっている」という別の意味になるので混同しないこと。

heading は、人や乗り物が現在向かっている方向や進路を表す名詞です。航海、飛行、運転、旅行の案内などでよく使われ、地図や計器の情報として示されることもあります。単なる目的地名より、移動の途中で定まる向きやコースに重点があります。
