解説 Definition
帆船が風をどちら側から受けて進むかを表す針路・受風側の名詞です。ヨットが風上へジグザグに進む際、右舷開き・左舷開きなどの状態を切り替える単位として使われます。そこから change tack は、議論や戦略の進め方を変える比喩にもなります。
In sailing, a tack is the direction a boat follows in relation to the wind. The word is used when talking about changing course by turning the boat so the wind comes from a different side.

tack は中英語 takke にさかのぼり、低地ドイツ語系の「小さな釘・留め具」に通じると考えられます。もともと「留めるための小さな金具」なので、紙などをちょんと固定する画鋲の意味になりました。関連語は thumbtack, tack down。
"Tack" comes from Middle English takke and is thought to be related to Low German words for a small nail or fastening piece. The basic idea was a little metal thing used to fasten something in place. That sense naturally became the modern meaning of a short nail or drawing pin, as in thumbtack.
