humour は古フランス語 humeur を経て、ラテン語 humor「体液・湿り気」に由来します。昔は体液の状態が気分や性格を左右すると考えられたため、「気分」から「おかしみ」へ意味が発展しました。関連語は humid, humorist。
Humour entered English through Old French humeur from Latin humor, meaning “moisture” or “bodily fluid.” In ancient and medieval medicine, bodily fluids called humours were believed to influence a person’s physical and emotional condition. The word therefore developed senses connected with mood, temperament, and personal disposition, and later came to denote an amusing quality or the ability to perceive and express comedy.
