ハイパーインフレ

解説 Definition

hyperinflation は、物価が短期間で極端に上がり続ける「ハイパーインフレ」という意味です。通常の inflation(インフレ)よりはるかに深刻な状態を指し、通貨の価値が急速に下がる文脈で使われます。日本語のカタカナ語と意味はほぼ同じですが、経済用語としては非常に急激な物価上昇を指します。

An extremely rapid and continuing rise in prices that sharply reduces the purchasing power of a currency. It is far more severe than ordinary inflation and can cause prices to change repeatedly within a very short period.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

hyper- は「過度の・通常を超えた」を表し、inflation は物価上昇です。単なる inflation ではなく、通貨への信頼が崩れ、prices change several times a day のように物価が極端な速さで上がる場面を結び付けて覚えます。

Break hyperinflation into hyper- and inflation. The prefix hyper- means “excessive” or “beyond the normal level,” as it does in words such as hyperactive. Inflation is a general rise in prices, but hyperinflation is the extreme case: money rapidly loses purchasing power, and shops may change prices several times in one day. Remember the contrast between ordinary inflation and an economic crisis in which wages and savings quickly become worth much less.

hyperinflation の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ギリシャ語hyper(超える・過度の)+ラテン語inflare(膨らませる:in-中へ+flare吹く)の組み合わせ。通常のインフレを「超える」異常な物価上昇を表す。関連語はhyperbole(誇張)、inflate(膨張させる)。接頭辞hyperが極端さを強調する。

Hyperinflation combines the Greek-derived prefix hyper-, meaning “over, beyond, or excessive,” with inflation. Inflation is related to Latin inflare, “to blow into or inflate,” formed from in- and flare, “to blow.” The economic sense developed from the image of an expanding supply or level, while hyper- marks the price increase as exceptionally severe.
