系の状態や出力が現在の入力だけでなく過去の履歴にも依存し、入力を元に戻しても同じ経路をたどらない現象。磁気、弾性、制御系などで見られる。
Hysteresis is a situation where a system does not react only to its present condition, but also to what happened before. It is often used in physics, engineering, and materials science to describe a delayed or history-dependent response.

ギリシャ語 hysteresis「遅れ・後れ」由来で、hyster- は「後の」、-sis は「状態」を表します。hysteretic や anhysteretic も同系で、原因が変わっても反応が一拍遅れて残る感覚が、そのまま「履歴を引きずる」意味になります。
