icon は後期ラテン語 icon、さらにギリシャ語 eikōn「似姿・像」にさかのぼります。宗教画や肖像のような「似せた像」が核で、そこからPC上で機能を表す小さな図柄であるアイコンにも広がりました。関連語は iconic, iconography。
