Impediment comes from Latin impedimentum, from impedire, which meant "to entangle the feet" or "hold back." It contains a root related to foot, with the image of someone unable to move freely. From that physical picture, the word developed into the broader idea of anything that blocks progress; impede and pedestrian are related.
