Memory Tip
im-「中へ」+port「運ぶ」と捉え、import oil from abroad「海外から石油を輸入する」やimport contacts into an app「連絡先をアプリへ取り込む」で覚えます。
Importing is the -ing form of import; simply add -ing without doubling a consonant or dropping a letter. Link im-, meaning “into,” with port, historically connected with “carry”: importing is carrying something in. In trade, a country may be importing oil from abroad. In computing, a user may be importing contacts into an application. The prepositions make the direction especially clear: import something from an outside source and into the receiving country, program, or device. Contrast this inward movement with exporting, which sends goods or data out.

The store has been importing exotic fruits from South America for years.
The country is importing more oil than it produces domestically.

Etymology
Importing is the present participle of import. Import entered English through Latin importare, formed from in-, “into,” and portare, “to carry.” The n of in- changed to m before p, producing im-. The original idea was therefore “to carry in,” which remains visible both in international trade and in the computing sense of bringing external data into a system.
