店に商品が現在在庫としてあり、すぐに注文や購入ができる状態を表す。通販や実店舗で「在庫あり」といえば、発送や持ち帰りの準備が整っているということ。

stockは古英語stocc（切り株・丸太）に由来し、倉庫に積み上げた丸太＝蓄えの意味に発展した。中世の商店では棚に並べた商品をstockと呼び、in stockで「棚にある＝入手可能」となった。関連語：stockpile（備蓄）、livestock（家畜＝生きた資産）。
