infecting の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語のin「中へ」+facere「作る・染める」が語源で、元来「内部に染み込ませる」意味です。病原が体内で「染まる」イメージから「感染する」に転じました。同語根のeffect(結果:外へ「作り出される」もの)も語根を共有します。

Infecting is the -ing form of infect. Infect comes through Latin infectus, associated with inficere, meaning “to put into, stain, or taint.” Inficere combines in-, “in” or “into,” with facere, “to make or do.” The idea of tainting or contaminating developed into the modern biological sense of introducing disease-causing organisms. English later extended that sense to harmful computer code. The suffix -ing marks an ongoing action or turns the action into a process.
