ingrained は in-「中へ」+ grain「粒・繊維の芯」と結びつき、もとは布が芯まで染まって色が落ちにくい状態を指しました。同系の grain や granular を思うと、「表面でなく中身にまで入り込んだ」ことが分かります。そこから、習慣や性質が抜けずに続くという意味で、この行の「絶え間ない」感覚にも結びつきます。
"Ingrained" combines "in-" with "grain," in the older sense of the natural fiber or inner structure of cloth or wood.
