ink の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ink は古フランス語 enque を経て、後期ラテン語 encaustum、さらにギリシャ語 enkauston に由来します。en-「中へ」+ kaiein「焼く」が元で、もとは「焼き付ける赤いインク」。caustic や encaustic と同根です。
Ink entered English through Old French enque and related forms, ultimately deriving from Late Latin encaustum and Greek enkauston. The Greek word is connected with a verb meaning “to burn in,” because heat was involved in an ancient process associated with pigments and writing material. The word later broadened to denote the liquids and other materials used in writing and printing.
