まず intelligible を軸に覚える。intelligent と同じ intelli- が見えるので、「頭で理解できる」方向の語だと連想しやすい。-ible は「〜できる」、-ity は「性質」なので、intelligibility は「理解できることの度合い」。音声なら speech intelligibility、文章なら intelligibility of the text のように、内容そのものより“伝わりやすさ・聞き取りやすさ”を言う語。clarity に近いが、こちらは実際に理解できるかに寄る。intelligence と混同して「知能」と取らないこと。

intelligibilityはintelligible+ -ityで、源流はラテン語intelligere「理解する」です。これはinter-「間で」+ legere「拾う」にさかのぼり、intelligentやlegibleと同根。「要点を拾える度合い」だから、わかりやすさの意味になります。
Intelligibility comes from intelligible plus -ity, and its deeper source is Latin intelligere, "to understand." That verb is often explained as inter- "between" plus legere "to gather, pick out," the same root seen in intelligent and legible. The idea is being able to pick out the meaning clearly, so the word came to mean the quality of being understandable.
