Legibility is the quality of being easy to read. It is often used when talking about handwriting, printed text, fonts, signs, or screen design. Good legibility means the letters and words are clear and not confusing.

まず legible「読める」を土台にし、-ity が付いて「その性質」なので、legibility は「読める状態の度合い」と押さえると覚えやすいです。意味は read できるかどうかの手前、文字そのものの見分けやすさに寄ります。font, handwriting, print, label などと相性がよく、poor legibility なら「字がつぶれて読みにくい」感じ。readability が文章全体の読みやすさまで含みやすいのに対し、legibility は文字の形の明瞭さ中心です。

legibility はラテン語 legere「読む」から来た legible に、-ity「性質」が付いた語です。語根 leg- は「読む・集める」を表し、lecture や legend も同系です。可読性とは、文字が見えることよりも、無理なく読み取れる性質だと分かります。
