font は印刷用語では fount の綴り違いで、古フランス語 fonte「鋳造」、さらにラテン語 fundere「注ぐ・溶かして流す」に由来します。活字を溶かした金属を型に流し込んで一式作ったことから、「字体一式」つまりフォントの意味になりました。関連語は foundry、fusion です。
