覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
interest「興味を持たせる」に -ing を付けた形から、「人の関心を引く」という形容詞になった。interesting book のように関心を生じさせる物・話を主語にする。人が興味を感じているなら interested を使い、The book is interesting / I am interested in the book と対で覚える。
Interesting comes from interest plus -ing and describes the source that creates interest. A book, story, class, person, or idea can be interesting because it attracts your attention and makes you want to know more. Contrast it with interested, which describes the person who feels that attention: “The book is interesting, so I am interested in it.” This cause-versus-feeling contrast is the most useful memory key. Learn common combinations such as “an interesting story,” “an interesting question,” and “find something interesting.” Although it resembles a participle, it commonly functions as an ordinary adjective.

interesting の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語inter(間に)+esse(ある)から成るinteresse(関わる・重要である)が古フランス語を経て英語に入った。「物事の間に存在する=関心を引く」が原義。関連語:interest(興味)、disinterested(公平な)。
Interesting developed from the verb interest with the participial suffix -ing. Interest ultimately comes through French and Latin from interesse, literally meaning to be between or among, and figuratively to concern, matter, or be important. Latin interesse combines inter, meaning between, with esse, meaning to be. The adjective interesting consequently came to describe something that concerns people or attracts and sustains their attention.
