英語 jar「瓶」は中世ラテン語 jarra、さらにスペイン語・カタルーニャ語 jarra を経て、アラビア語 jarrah、究極的にはペルシア語系にさかのぼるとされる。地中海交易で広まった水差しや油壺の名で、jarful や bell jar にも「中に入れる器」の感覚が残る。
