Etymology
The adjective jumbo became widespread in the late nineteenth century from Jumbo, the name of a famously large African elephant exhibited at the London Zoo and later by P. T. Barnum. The elephant’s fame made his name a general label for something of exceptional size. The earlier origin of the name Jumbo is uncertain, though possible African-language connections have been proposed. Modern compounds include jumbo jet and jumbo pack.
