The ethnonym Ket comes from the Ket language itself, in which ket means “person” or “human being.” It is therefore an endonym, a name originating in the community’s own language. The Ket traditionally live in the Yenisei basin of Siberia, and their language belongs to the Yeniseian family. Ket is its only surviving member. A distant relationship with the Na-Dene languages has been proposed, but that wider genetic connection remains a scholarly hypothesis rather than an established origin of the name.
