ラテン語 licentia（自由・許可）から古フランス語 licence を経て英語に入った。語根 licēre は「許される」の意味で、接尾辞 -ing が動名詞化している。関連語に license（免許）、illicit（不法な＝許されない）がある。「公に許可を与える行為」が原義である。
