lodger は lodge「泊まる・宿を与える」に人を表す -er が付いた語で、lodge は古フランス語 loge「小屋・宿」にさかのぼります。もとは雨露をしのぐ仮の小屋なので、「間借りして泊まる人」という像が見え、lodging や dislodge も同根です。
