帆船で中心となる最も大きな帆で、通常は主マストに取り付けられ、船の推進力の多くを生み出す。風を受けて船を前進させるうえで重要な帆であり、操船や速度の調整にも大きく関わる基本的な装備である。
A mainsail is the main sail on a sailing boat or ship. It is usually the largest and most important sail for moving the boat forward. The word is mainly used when talking about sailing and boats.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
main + sail でそのまま「船のメインの帆」と捉えるのが最短です。main は main idea, main road の main と同じで「主要な」、sail は「帆」。つまり many sails の中で中心になる帆だと整理すると残ります。mainmast（主マスト）に付くことも一緒に覚えると定着しやすいです。jib や spinnaker のような補助的な帆と違い、mainsail は船を進める基本の帆、という役割差で覚えると混同しにくくなります。
