manga の語源・成り立ち Etymology
manga は英語に日本語 manga として入った借用語で、語源は漢語の 漫「気ままな、そぞろな」＋画「絵」です。直訳すれば「気ままな絵」で、そこから自由な筆致の絵や物語作品を指すようになったと考えると意味の広がりが見えます。関連語として英語では mangaka も使われます。
English manga is a direct borrowing of Japanese manga, written 漫画.
