accountable は account + -able で、直訳すると「説明を差し出せる」「帳簿を示せる」。account は古フランス語を経てラテン語 computare「数え合わせる」にさかのぼり、count と同根なので、「責任ある」が元は『数えて説明できる』感覚だと見えてくる。
