Maronite is derived from the name of Saint Maron, an ascetic monk active in Syria around the late fourth and early fifth centuries, plus the membership suffix -ite. Communities associated with his followers developed monastic centers and later became strongly established in the mountains of Lebanon. The Maronite Church preserves a West Syriac liturgical tradition and forms one of the Eastern Catholic churches in communion with Rome. Its name therefore expresses historical affiliation with Maron.
