Subclinical describes a disease, condition, or symptom that is present but not strong enough to be clearly noticed or diagnosed from obvious signs. It is mainly used in medical or scientific contexts.

clinical が「臨床の・診察で表に出る」、sub- が「下・一段下」と分かると、「clinical の手前、まだ表立たない段階」という像で覚えやすい語です。つまり病気のプロセスはあるが、本人はまだ症状を自覚していない状態。検査や画像では異常が見つかる、という場面と結びつけると定着します。subclinical infection, subclinical hypothyroidism など病名と続きやすく、symptomatic（症状あり）との対比、asymptomatic よりも「検査では拾える」含みがある点もセットで押さえると混同しません。

Subclinical is built from Latin sub-, meaning "under" or "below," and clinical. Clinical comes through Greek kline, meaning "bed," because medicine was linked to care at the bedside.
