clinical はギリシャ語 kline「寝台・横たわること」にさかのぼり、klinikos「病床のそばの」がラテン語・フランス語を経て英語化した語。clin- は「ベッド」の感覚で、患者の寝台のそばで診ることから「臨床の」になった。関連語は clinic, clinician。
