latent はラテン語 latens（動詞 latere「隠れている」の現在分詞）に由来し、もともと「見えない所に潜む」という感触の語です。そこから「表には出ていないが存在する」という意味になりました。関連語は latency。
Latent comes from Latin latens, the present participle of latere, meaning "to lie hidden." Its earliest sense was something concealed or not yet seen. From that, it developed the meaning "present but not active or visible," which is still its main idea today.
