Grudge goes back to Middle English grucchen, meaning to complain or mutter in dissatisfaction, and is linked to Old French forms of the same kind. The word first suggested a low, continuing feeling of complaint rather than open anger. From that sense, it developed into the modern idea of long-held resentment.
