mend は古フランス語 amender、さらにラテン語 emendare「欠点を取り除いて正す」に由来します。e-/ex-「外へ」+ mendum「欠点」と見れば、「悪い所を外へ出す」感覚で repair の意味が腑に落ちます。amend や emend も同根です。
Mend comes from Old French amender, which goes back to Latin emendare, meaning "correct" or "remove faults." The Latin word is built from a part meaning "out" and mendum, meaning "fault."
