「人魚」とは、上半身が人間で下半身が魚の形をした伝説上の生き物を指します。世界中の神話や民話に登場し、海に住むとされています。アンデルセンの童話「人魚姫」などで広く知られています。

mermaid は mere「海・湖」+ maid「少女」から成る語で、古英語系の要素を合わせた「海の娘」が原義です。水辺に住む若い女性の姿をした存在という発想が、そのまま「人魚」の意味になりました。関連語に merman, maiden があります。
