maid は maiden の短縮形で、古英語 mægden「少女・未婚の娘」に由来するゲルマン系の語です。明確な接頭辞はありませんが、maid と maiden は同根で、もとは単に「若い娘」を指しました。そこから若い女性の召使いの意味が育ち、今のメイド像につながります。
