ラテン語 merus（純粋な、混じりけのない）が古フランス語 mer を経て英語に入った。原義は「それだけで混じりものがない」→「ほんの、ただの」と縮小的な意味に変化。関連語：merely（単に）。純粋さが「それしかない」という限定の意味に転じた点が興味深い。
"Mere" comes from Latin merus, meaning "pure" or "unmixed," through Old French mer. The earlier sense was "nothing but itself," with no extra element mixed in. From that, it developed the weaker modern sense of "only" or "just." The related adverb "merely" keeps the same history.
