Microstructures are very small structures or patterns inside a material or object that can only be seen clearly with special tools such as a microscope. The term is common in science, engineering, and biology. It often refers to the internal arrangement that affects how something behaves or functions.

micro は microscope, microwave などでおなじみの「とても小さい」、structure は「構造」。まずこの2語に分けると意味がかなり見えます。単数なら microstructure、ここでは -s が付いて「複数の微細構造」。材料・組織・表面を拡大して見たときの細かな作りを指す語で、macrostructure（大きな構造）と対比すると覚えやすいです。『見た目は同じでも、性質の差は microstructures に出る』のように、性能や特徴を左右する細部という感覚で押さえると定着します。

ギリシャ語 mikros（小さい）とラテン語 structura（組み立て、構造）の合成語。structura は struere（積み上げる）に由来し、construct（建設する）や infrastructure（基盤）と同根。「微小レベルで積み上げられた構造」が原義。
