millwork は mill「製粉所・工場」と work「仕事・加工」を合わせた複合語です。mill は古英語 mylen、さらにラテン語 mola「ひき臼」に由来し、工場で機械加工された木工品という意味になりました。mill や workmanship が関連語です。
Millwork is a compound of mill and work. Mill comes through Old English from Latin mola, meaning "millstone," and the word later came to mean a factory using machines. From there, millwork developed the sense of wood products made by machine in a mill rather than by hand alone.
