古英語 mōnandæg（月の日）から。ラテン語 lunae dies（月の日）の翻訳借用で、moon（月）+ day（日）の合成語。関連語: moon, lunar。古代ゲルマン人がローマの曜日名を自言語に訳した名残。
Monday comes from Old English mōnandæg, literally “moon’s day.” It was modeled on the Latin weekday name lunae dies, also meaning “day of the moon,” when Germanic speakers adapted the Roman system of naming days after heavenly bodies and gods. Moon and day therefore preserve the word’s original structure. The related adjective lunar comes separately through Latin luna, meaning “moon.”
