異なる血統を持つ親から生まれた動物、特に犬を指します。純粋種ではなく、複数の血統が混ざったものを表します。隠喩的には、混合物や混血の人を指すこともあります。
A mongrel is a dog with parents of different breeds, not a purebred dog. The word can also describe something mixed from different types. When used about people, it can sound offensive, so it should be used carefully.

mongrel は中英語で、古英語 gemong「混ざり合い」にさかのぼり、mong- が「混合」を表します。そこにやや軽蔑的な接尾辞 -rel が付き「混ざったもの」の意に。mingle, among も同根で、「入り交じった種」だから雑種です。
Mongrel comes from Middle English and goes back to an Old English root seen in gemong, meaning "mixed." The first part is related to the idea of mixing, as in mingle and among. With the ending -rel added, the word came to mean something of mixed kind or mixed origin.
