英国方言の natter は、北イングランドの gnatter「ぶつぶつしゃべる」が縮まった形で、もとは音まね語的な語です。関連語に gnatter があり、細かく口を動かす感じから「取りとめなくおしゃべりする」という意味になりました。
Natter comes from a British dialect word, probably a reduced form of gnatter. Gnatter was likely imitative in origin, copying the sound of quick, repeated talk. From that sound-based idea, natter came to mean talking in a light, continuous, or trivial way. The older related form is gnatter.
