交渉者は、異なる立場の人々や組織の間で合意に達するために交渉を行う人です。高いコミュニケーション能力と柔軟な思考が必要です。国際紛争の解決に重要な役割を果たします。
A negotiator is a person whose job or role is to discuss with others in order to reach an agreement. This word is often used in business, politics, diplomacy, and conflict situations.

まず negotiate（交渉する）と negotiation（交渉）を軸にすると覚えやすい。語尾 -or は actor, translator と同じ「〜する人」なので、negotiator は「交渉を担当する人」。ただの話し合い役ではなく、利害の違う相手と条件を詰め、合意点を探る人を指す。mediator が中立の仲介者なのに対し、negotiator はふつう自分の側を代表する。chief negotiator, peace negotiator, tough negotiator などの形で見慣れておくと定着しやすい。

negotiatorはラテン語negotiatorに由来し、さらにnegotium「仕事・用件」にさかのぼる。これはnec「ない」+ otium「余暇」で、直訳すれば「暇ではない状態」。negotiateやnegotiableにも同じ核があり、交渉が「仕事として話をまとめること」だと見える。
Negotiator comes from Latin negotiator, from negotium meaning "business" or "affair." That Latin word was built from nec "not" and otium "leisure," so its oldest sense was something like "not being at leisure." From the idea of handling business matters, it developed into someone whose work is to discuss and arrange agreements.
