newsletter は news＋letter の複合語です。news は古英語系の new「新しい」、letter はフランス語経由でラテン語 littera「文字」に由来し、関連語に literal, literature があるので、「新しい知らせを文字で送るもの」と分かります。
Newsletter is a compound of news and letter. News developed from new and came to mean reports of recent events or information. Letter entered English through French from Latin littera, meaning a written character or written communication. The compound therefore describes a written publication carrying news. Although newsletters existed in printed form long before email, the same word now commonly refers to periodical updates distributed electronically to subscribers.
