nickel はスウェーデン語を経て、ドイツ語 Kupfernickel に由来します。Kupfer「銅」＋ Nickel「いたずら者・悪鬼」で、銅のように見えるのに銅が取れない鉱石を「銅の悪魔」と呼んだことから、金属名になりました。関連語は Old Nick, copper-nickel です。
The metal name came into English through Swedish nickel, from German Kupfernickel. In that compound, Kupfer means “copper,” while Nickel was a name for a mischievous spirit or goblin. Miners used the expression for ore that resembled copper ore but did not yield copper as expected. When the distinct metal was identified in the eighteenth century, the shortened name nickel was applied to it.
