古フランス語 plate（金属板）に由来し、さらにギリシャ語 platys（平らな）が語根。platform（台）や platitude（平凡）と同根。「平らな金属板を表面に貼る」が原義で、金属の薄膜で覆う加工技術＝メッキの意味になった。
